Often (or sometimes), I hear people ask, "are you religious?" Just the other day at work, Janessa overheard coworkers discussing the subject. I tend to believe that I am not religious. The whole aspect of "getting religion" or "being religious" reminds me of ritual after ritual, offering incense, traditions.... but I've been discussing religion with Amanda Todd, and decided I would share my current understanding. (Beware: many references to other sources such as dictionaries, and great needed sources like the Bible :)

I think the world's definition of religion is short. We simply ask, "Hey, what religion are you?" Or we fill in the Facebook blank. Religion: Christian. One definition of religion is "a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion (dictionary.com)" This can give us a general understanding. When we hear someone state that their religion is Christianity, we think "Oh, they believe in God and Jesus and ect." However, when someone says they are Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, or other religions that we are less familiar with, I think we have heard a lot of skewed truths. I believe that people who are unfamiliar with Christians also have a lot of misconceptions.

This is why we should no longer just say, "I'm a Christian." The simplest definitions of "Christian" are "someone who believes in Jesus Christ." In James 2:19, it states "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." It's pretty much saying, "You believe? That's a good start.. but.. even the devils believe." Thats fantastic that we believe, and we desire to claim that we believe. We should say that we are a Christian. But we should also add more about our "religion". What is our definition of Christian? What does it mean to us? What are we going to do with the fact that we believe?

This is where religion comes in.

Dictionary.com's first definition of religion is this: "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs." Its not short and sweet!.. more like thorough and rough. But when we say we are a Christian, we are answering most of the questions of religion. We are stating that we believe in a God. We believe that God created. We believe in Christ. We are devoted and observe. We have morals.

But how does that make us different than thousands of other people?

The Bible has few verses using term "religion" (a varying number depending on which version of the Bible you use). James 1:27 describes it most accurately,

"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

According to the world, we are religious. We do take part in actions for something we believe in. We struggle to stay separate from the world. We promote volunteering for orphans. We are encouraged to spend time with widows. Because, James also admonishes the church that, "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone (James 2:17)." We prove our faith by our works. We show our belief by our religion.

Currently, religion to me is just as it is described in James 2:17. (I would recommend reading the entire book of James) I guess religion ends up being more similiar to the world's (or dictionary.com's) definition than I thought it would be. I guess I just shy away from saying I am religious as the world cannot comprehend that.. and saying that leads to misconceptions.. or so I believe. Just as so many see no difference in being a Christian and being a follower of Jesus Christ.

Ay ay ay... what a crazy world we live in.

So much sin.
So much confusion.
So much desperation.
So much ugliness.
So much beauty.
So much hope.
So much truth.
So much opportunity.
So much.

It's a vicious cycle. That's the way I make it. I keep jumping ahead.. ready to orchestrate my life. And each time, the pieces in the puzzle disappear. I've discovered that I have no clue what my future holds. Each little guess I've had lately has become an impossibility. As a dreamer, I sit stunned.. and then my thoughts fly away again.

I think the point might be that I need to stop, sit in silence, and let God take over. Yet that's really hard for me, a dreamer. It's so hard to stop imagining what my own future could be.. when deep down I know that God probably has plans for me that are ten times better than my own.

Let us go over to the other side. (Mark 4:35)

Even though we follow Christ's command, we should not expect to escape the storm. In this passage of Scripture, the disciples were obeying His command, yet they encountered the fiercest of storms and were in great danger of being drowned. In their distress, they cried out for Christ's assistance.

Christ may delay coming to us during our times of distress, but it is simply so our faith may be tested and strengthened. His purpose is also that our prayers will be more powerful, our desire for deliverance will be greater, and when deliverance finally comes we will appreciate it more fully.

Gently rebuking His disciples, Christ asked, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" (v. 40). In effect, He was saying, "Why didn't you face the storm victoriously and shout to the raging winds and rolling waves, 'You cannot harm us, for Christ, the mighty Savior, is on board'?"

Of course, it is much easier to trust God when the sun is shining than to trust Him when the storm is raging around us. Yet we will never know our level of genuine faith until it is tested in a fierce storm, and that is why our Savior is on board.

If you are ever to "be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power" (Eph. 6:10), your strength will be born during a storm.

Today, I had an exam
on a Monday morning in June. I'm surprised that taking summer classes doesn't feel a lot stranger. I've actually found it quite relaxing. It is weird only seeing a couple students walking to and from classes, and there's a lot less PYG around.. yet its almost like having a break while still earning 3 more, much-needed credits. I actually think that I might enjoy summer school! Of course it helps that I like the professor, and although the class work is difficult, it's not too much of an overload. But who wouldn't want to finish a class in 4 weeks?

And as class only takes up 2 hours and 10 minutes of my day, I have plenty of time for other grand activities :)

Last Thursday, I made Banana Cream, Strawberry Cream Cheese, and Spinach, Bacon & Mushroom Crepes. Turns out.... I'm not very great at keeping the kitchen clean while cooking/baking....
Amanda works at a Panera in Indy right next to Broad Ripple.. Katelyn and I went to visit her and browse the shops. We found some great vintage buys!..Friday night we blew bubbles.... and a couple unmentioned people got a little soapy...

Everybody's waiting for some miracle
We're caught up by life's suspense
But the evidence is not empirical

We need uncommon sense

Everybody tries to understand this place
To find some new defense
For the way we live
So unaware of grace

We need uncommon sense
To show us heaven shining through
Uncommon sense
Will bring our pathways into view

We cry out in search of a Savior and King
We climb up and reach out for anything
His love and redemption so hard to conceive
We've got to have uncommon sense to believe

Surprisingly, Elliott Hall of Music tends to occasionally leave doors unlocked! A few of us went exploring Purdue Campus to discover some great adventure spots. Down under the stage we found old theater seats and creepy, murder-movie looking storage rooms. The dressing rooms are amazing with hundreds of lights and mirrors - I really want to go back with a camera better than the one on my phone! They had a large practice room with instruments left in it.. they must really trust wandering Purdue students. We also found the Rehearsal Room for the Purdue Glee Club. It is fully equipped with microphones, a grand piano, and a drum set.... you can about imagine what happened.... Sadly, we could not find the way leading to the stage.. crushing our dreams of pretending to be famous for a moment. But I have to say that this past year, I have visited some pretty interesting, out-of-the-way places on campus... some so classified, I do not think I have the liberty to mention them on a public blog! However, I think I would make a decent unofficial tour guide of Purdue....although... I do not plan on walking backwards much :)

Mmmm.....
